A Message from the Director

There are moments when, stepping back from the daily rhythm of our work, you see something that genuinely moves you. These past weeks have been filled with such moments for me. Across our Centre, I have witnessed a community that is not merely busy, but purposeful — not simply present, but deeply alive to what it is here to do.

Our Strategic Plan continues to serve as a steady compass, giving shape and direction to everything we undertake. But what truly heartens me is this: our Strategic Plan is no longer just a document on a page. It has become a living reality — visible in the energy of our CPD initiatives, in the quality of leadership conversations, and in the growing strength of our Communities of Practice across Cork schools. Aspiration, it seems, has found its feet.

Those same qualities radiate outward into the Cork schools we serve — into classrooms and staffrooms, into leadership forums and student gatherings. Our Centre has grown not just in reach, but in depth of relationship, walking alongside each teacher, SNA and school leader as we honour and build upon the legacy entrusted to us.

We are, I believe, becoming the Centre we always set out to be — confident in who we are, clear in where we are going and genuinely hopeful about the road ahead. I am grateful to each of you for making that possible.

Navigating a Volatile World

We cannot write this newsletter without acknowledging the profound uncertainty that marks our world at this moment. The wars and conflicts that continue to cause immeasurable suffering, the shifting of global orders, and the anxieties these generate — all of these reach into the lives of our students, their families and our school communities. We hold all who are affected in our thoughts and prayers.

It is precisely in times such as these that the work of education reveals its deepest significance. As teachers, we are called — more urgently than ever — to nurture schools that are genuinely inclusive, rooted in a commitment to justice and to the dignity of every learner who walks through our doors.

The insights of Paulo Freire remain as vital as ever. When we move beyond transmission and towards real engagement, we create the conditions in which every child, regardless of background or circumstance, can find their voice and grow in confidence and agency. In the Irish context, this is the living reality of the teacher who truly listens; the school where every family feels welcomed; the classroom where difference is not merely tolerated but celebrated.

Freire believed authentic education is always an act of hope. By co-creating the conditions for deep listening, confidence and freedom, we are not simply teaching curriculum — we are forming people. Our schools, at their best, are spaces where young people learn not only to understand the world, but to question it, reimagine it, and help build a better one for all.

A Timely Resource for Irish Classrooms — Key to the EU

With Ireland assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from 1st July to 31st December 2026, we are delighted to highlight a wonderful new teaching resource developed by Dr. Emmanuelle Schon-Quinlivan of University College Cork. Key to the EU is a free, six-week programme designed for primary pupils, offering ready-to-use lessons, activities and videos exploring active citizenship within the European Union. Far from simply promoting the EU, this resource invites young learners to understand, question and engage with it — building the critical thinking, collaborative and debating skills that lie at the heart of good education. As Ireland prepares to take its place at the centre of European affairs, this is a timely and valuable addition to any primary classroom.

Seachtain na Gaeilge 2026

As the end of Seachtain na Gaeilge 2026 approaches, I want to wish all of our schools the very warmest of greetings and encouragement. Go néirí go geal libh go léir. This wonderful annual celebration is a moment for our entire school community to come together in the joy, the richness and the beauty of the Irish language.

Whether through song, storytelling, drama, poetry, sport or simply the everyday use of cúpla focal, Seachtain na Gaeilge invites us to celebrate a living inheritance. It is a reminder that language is not merely a subject on a timetable — it is an expression of identity, community and belonging. The Irish language connects us to one another, to our heritage and to a vision of who we are as a people.

I look forward to hearing about the wonderful celebrations taking place across our schools. Maith sibh go léir!

As St. Patrick's Day arrives, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable community we have built together — one defined by dedication, resilience and a shared commitment to learning. Much like the enduring spirit of this day, our Cork education community continues to grow, flourish, and inspire those around us. It is a privilege to lead and serve alongside each and every one of you. On behalf of the entire CESC team, I wish you and your loved ones a joyful and peaceful St. Patrick's Day. May this season bring warmth, good fortune, and renewed energy as we continue on this journey together.

With gratitude and best wishes,

Edmond Hussey

Director
